WINTER 2024

Workshops

“A word or a phrase or a sentence is like a pebble that, when thrown into the pool of the body-mind, sets up ripples that disturb the waters. The waters? Physical, sensory, sensual, and emotional energies.”      Kristin Linklater – Freeing the Natural Voice

A lively introduction to the Linklater Voice Work or a terrific refresher for those who have already had Linklater classes.  This workshop will help you free your breath, develop resonance, loosen jaw and tongue tensions and wake up your vocal range.

Relaxation and release is essential to opening, freeing and ultimately strengthening your voice.  In this initial workshop, you are becoming aware of how your voice and body carry habitual tensions and beginning to undo them.  This is the start to freeing your breath and vibrations of sound.  As your voice begins to loosen up, the next step is to develop resonance by sensing and spreading the vibrations through the bony hollows of your body.  Once this connection is established we can move onto addressing deep tensions that develop in the jaw, larynx, and tongue and encourage your sigh to find a free and focused pathway beyond those tensions that filter your message.  By giving your sigh of sound a clear passageway from the lower body all the way up through the mouth, you will be ready to begin to strengthen the voice and activate more expressiveness with the resonating ladder.  In Voice 1 you will contact the chest, the mouth, and the teeth resonators and blend to find a warm, relaxed and focused connection between your thoughts, feelings and your voice.

“The actor must crave insecurity, the unknown, the uncharted boundaries of imagination, because traveling along that edge leads to the promised land of creativity.” - Kristin Linklater

How would you communicate differently if you were able to finally quiet that inner critic? Overcome your fear of judgment? Dissipate that cloud of anxious thinking? Speaking up and sharing your ideas feels so challenging when fight-or-flight has hijacked the body.

This 2-day workshop will grant you the tools for befriending The Fear and reconnecting with yourself so that you may confidently lean into on-the-spot moments and speak from a place of inspiration and clarity.

After loosening up with a brief physical and vocal warm-up, a curated progression of ensemble games and exercises will be explored to enliven the body, get fully present with others, foster a spontaneous relationship with language, and connect with the liberating and highly creative "state of Yes.”

Whether you're a performer, writer, teacher, or simply eager to explore, this workshop welcomes adult participants of all levels with no prior experience necessary. Together, we will play in a supportive space where you may come home to the boundlessness and vitality of your unique self-expression.

We look forward to welcoming you in February to a weekend filled with connection and spontaneity. Let your impulses soar and your creativity flourish in this unique and empowering workshop.

The Advanced Voice Clinic is for performers and speakers who have previously learned the Linklater Voice Progression and are interested in taking a deeper dive into the intricacies of the method.  It’s ideal as well for those who teach voice at the university level or are training to teach voice.

In this workshop we’ll explore the full progression of exercises developed by Kristin Linklater - focusing particularly on the sections in the later parts of the progression.  After going into the details of each exercise, we’ll look at the reasoning and purpose in how each section builds upon the one before and prepares the way ahead. The purpose is for you to experience ways to open your unique natural voice that connects to your inner life in a rich, authentic, and meaningful way, and then develop more vocal range, strength, and variety to meet the demands of your text.

After exercising the full range of your voice, you will play with the elements that contribute to a more imaginative and tactile experience of language that is embodied in vowels and consonants.  We’ll see how all of this can be translated into a spoken text of your choice.
