The discipline and tactile pleasure of stretching and elasticizing one’s body, of freeing the breath, and gathering the resonance of the sound vibrations in the bony hollows of the body; of undoing specific tensions in the jaw, tongue and larynx; and waking up the sweep of one’s vocal range, and engaging the lively economy of the articulators; may seem on one level as the routine of little actions, but on a deeper level it is carving out time and space in our busy day to meet ourselves – to be present in our whole being.
Come warm up with us – to prepare for an audition or a show, to care for vocal strain, or just to keep in vocal tone. Want to spend a few minutes each week investing in yourself and strengthening your craft? This series of exercises is designed to free your voice, mind, and body to find your authentic self, and to become more expressively present in the world.

“Sensation is the vessel into which your genuine artistic feelings pour easily and by themselves; it is a kind of magnet which draws to it feelings and emotions akin to whatever quality you have chosen for your movement.” - Michael Chekhov
The central nervous system governs the whole organism through continuous streams of images be they auditory, olfactory, tactile, visual, impressionistic, or figurative. Images in voice work help to reconcile the acts of listening and speaking to the whole organism…Embodied listening and speaking involves the whole person from feet to skull.” - Kristin Linklater
In this course, Brett Radke synthesizes the work of two dynamic teachers: Kristin Linklater and Michael Chekhov. The Michael Chekhov Technique is a psychophysical approach to acting that empowers the actor to transform through imagination and movement. This class integrates the actor’s body, voice, intellect, and emotional life, using the imagination to fuel the embodied expression of language.
With a special emphasis on transforming somatic experience into the spoken word, each session begins with an imaginative physical and vocal warm-up that draws upon the exercises in the Linklater Voice Method. Then, you will engage in psychophysical exercises designed to awaken your inner sensory life, tap into higher frequencies of energy, and embrace expansive expression. You will apply such tools in the Michael Chekhov Method as Archetypal Action, Inner and Outer Tempo, Imaginary Centers, Atmosphere, and Color to a dramatic text of your choosing.
Whether you have previous exposure to the Linklater or Chekhov methods or are exploring them for the first time, this class offers practical, repeatable, and imaginative exercises to deepen the integration of voice, body, and text.

”Maximum effect with minimum effort” is the hallmark of great art. Great art is rooted in truth. Minimum effort demands a commitment to inner processes of imagination and emotion that stimulate the body and voice to truthful expression from inside out. In order to develop a voice that will create maximum effect with minimum effort and therefore be truthful, actors must exercise the vocal musculature in a way that conditions the voice to respond to imaginative and emotional stimulus.” Kristin Linklater
Relaxation and release is essential to opening, freeing and ultimately strengthening your voice. In this initial class, you are becoming aware of how your voice and body carry habitual tensions and beginning to undo them. This is the start to freeing your breath and vibrations of sound. As your voice begins to loosen up, the next step is to develop resonance by sensing and spreading the vibrations through the bony hollows of your body. Once this connection is established we can move onto addressing deep tensions that develop in the jaw, larynx, and tongue and encourage your sigh to find a free and focused pathway beyond those tensions that filter your message. By giving your sigh of sound a clear passageway from the lower body all the way up through the mouth, you will be ready to begin to strengthen the voice and activate more expressiveness with the resonating ladder. In Voice 1 you will contact the chest, the mouth, and the teeth resonators and blend to find a warm, relaxed and focused connection between your thoughts, feelings and your voice.

“The muscles that articulate words must be freed from limiting conditioning and made responsive and agile enough to reflect the agility of the mind…A sensitive performer will want a voice that serves the desire to communicate.” Kristin Linklater, Freeing the Natural Voice
Freedom in your body and breath is the foundation for a free, expressive voice. Yet accessing that freedom - especially with dynamic energy and vibrant resonance - can feel elusive. In higher-stakes moments, when you want your voice to be clear and alive, long-held habits often surface. Over time, many of us have developed patterns of tension that limit spontaneity, particularly in public settings.
In this class, Tamala guides you through Part II of her series on Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement Lessons® (ATM) and the Linklater Voice Method. The focus of this series will explore how increased awareness transforms the way you utilize your nervous system, creating the conditions for deep curiosity, embodied learning, and authentic expression. Each class begins with a Feldenkrais ATM lesson designed to develop a more refined, kinesthetic understanding of the muscular/skeletal relationship. From there you’ll move to Linklater voice exercises that open the resonators of your vocal range, focusing on a new resonator in each class.
As you gently unwind years of habitual tensions held in the muscles and tissues around the bones of your foundation, you unlock the potential to express your full, resonant self - body and voice integrated. This workshop is for anyone interested in voice and somatic practice. This is Part II of Tamala’s Feldenkrais & Voice Series. Students of all levels are welcome.
Please have a piece of text that you are passionate about - a monologue, Shakespeare speech, public speech, poem, etc.
