“Those whose aim is to share what they feel with an audience will allow emotional energy to activate the breath and generate vibrations.  These vibrations, reinforced by all appropriate resonating feedback, will flow out through the body, gathering a mix of sinus, cheekbone and nasal vibrations as they travel through the face, creating sound waves with a carrying power faithful to the initial aim. Communication is the byproduct of desire, intention and freedom.”
Kristin Linklater

A lively introduction to the Linklater Voice Work or a terrific refresher for those who have already had Linklater classes.  This workshop will help you free your breath, develop resonance, loosen jaw and tongue tensions and wake up your vocal range.

Relaxation and release is essential to opening, freeing and ultimately strengthening your voice.  In this initial workshop, you are becoming aware of how your voice and body carry habitual tensions and beginning to undo them.  This is the start to freeing your breath and vibrations of sound.  As your voice begins to loosen up, the next step is to develop resonance by sensing and spreading the vibrations through the bony hollows of your body.  Once this connection is established we can move onto addressing deep tensions that develop in the jaw, larynx, and tongue and encourage your sigh to find a free and focused pathway beyond those tensions that filter your message.  By giving your sigh of sound a clear passageway from the lower body all the way up through the mouth, you will be ready to begin to strengthen the voice and activate more expressiveness with the resonating ladder.  In Voice 1 you will contact the chest, the mouth, and the teeth resonators and blend to find a warm, relaxed and focused connection between your thoughts, feelings and your voice.

“It is from the uniqueness of each individual that rich and creative communication comes. Freedom should be the foundation of that communication.”

"As we continue the exploration of breathing capacity the challenge is again to ask your Self: "What is my capacity for imagination, for emotion, for desire? What could I say through these large spaces I find within myself?"  Let your developing breathing capacity suggest the development of your creative capacity."

Kristin Linklater

This workshop is meant for those who have taken voice before and are interested in deepening and expanding their mind-body-voice connection.  You will explore a series of practical and imaginative exercises that strengthen your full range of resonance, expand your breath capacity, and wake up your articulation in order to find a bridge to speaking your text in a clearer and livelier way.

Each session begins with an embodied warm-up focused on releasing tension in the throat, tongue, and jaw while opening and freeing the voice. These practices support fuller breathing, enhance vocal flexibility, and strengthen the dynamic range of your instrument.

Then you’ll focus on awakening  the muscles of your mouth that support economical articulation and connect to the tactile sensation of consonants by playing with tongue twisters so you are ready to speak your text clearly and expressively.

Please have some text ready to explore.

Any good piece of writing has its own palpable rhythm, texture, and style. A sensitive interpreter will allow that rhythm to alter personal rhythms, will absorb the different texture to color the voice differently, will let the style shape and transform delivery. A sensitive performer, whether interpreting a text or not, will want a voice that serves the desire to communicate.” Kristin Linklater

This workshop will use the Linklater progression of exercises to play with what is called “prosody” - the music, rhythm, resonance, volume, and pitch of the voice, and to develop how your voice wants to live and speak from different resonating spaces in your body, to find an authentic and fully inhabited character.

At the same time, you will use Viewpoints vocabulary and methodology to explore action and stillness with time and space, along with impulses from physical centers, to develop behavior that transparently reflects how your character communicates and moves through their world.

Each day will begin with a guided Linklater warm-up followed by improvisations utilizing a prepared piece of text.  Please have some text ready that challenges you to find new ways of embodied characterization.
